About the Theater:

Built in 1896, the Capital/Royalty Theatre enjoyed enormous popularity first as a vaudeville & opera house. For decades, many of the country’s biggest stars graced the stage of the theatre, including Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and Clark Gable. In the 40’s the theatre hosted Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bob Hope and Sammy Davis Jr. as they performed for U.S. military troops.

By the 1950’s the beautiful theatre had become one of America’s premier movie palaces, but continued to be a favorite venue for many world-renowned performers. In the 60’s and 70’s, concerts by Elvis Presley, and Liza Minelli helped further the Royalty Theatre’s reputation as a great "little opera house”. That musical heritage continued, as dozens of classic theatrical productions were presented over the next two decades.

We are going to hold back the majority of the details regarding the reported haunting at the Theater, just to avoid mental contamination to those whole will investigate it. However, we will tell you that there is a documented murder that took place in the theater in1981. This was a very brutal hate crime murder that took the life of the then theater manager.

Additionally, there was a terrible sexual assault committed against a performer (dancer) at the theater, back when the venue was used as a vaudeville house. There is said to be a vast amount of activity revolving around the area of these crime locations within the theatre. Feel free to look these up and research but we are not adding to any speculation that might interfere with your findings.

Additionally, the current owner, Socrates Charos, as well as other theatergoers, have reported a bevy of strange activity within the theater. It is said that sightings of "angels", a shadow man and more have been spotted within the walls.

A few paranormal research groups have conducted impromptu investigations at the property and have discovered strange unexplainable photos in their findings, such as the one below. Could this be the Royalty Theatre's "Shadow man"? Take a look in the center of the image:

There was no one present in the theater other than 3 people at the time this photograph was taken in March 2008. None of those 3 occupants were in the seating area. As this image taken of the stage shows, there seems to be an indication of a shadowy figure looming in the theatre seating, as captured through the rear stage mirror.

You can see a brief video of the theaters interiors seating area by clicking the link below. The camera pans left to right to show the scope of the seating area including balcony / loge. Video is 100k in Gp3 format (Quicktime):

Royalty Financial Woes!
You may be the last to ever investigate the theater!

Owner Socrates Charos (pictured above) needs help to save the theater, as it is currently under chapter 13 bankruptcy. Over the past few years, the theater has seen a decrease in the flow of business, due to the closing of the original memorial causeway bridge in the mid 1990's. The causeway, which funneled past the theater doors, remained a vital artery for business at the theater. Since traffic is few and far between now, Socrates has struggled to keep the place afloat.

If Socrates loses his fight to keep the spirit of the theater alive, the hotel will more than likely become demolished to make way for condos. The Church of Scientology has also expressed interest in buying the theater. Lets help make sure that neither of those options happen and that the Royalty Theatre remains the land mark that it is. For Socrates and for the City of Clearwater.

You can help save the theater!

If you are interested in donating a few dollars to help save the old theater, please call Socrates Charos at 727-441-8868 to help out. With your assistance, you can help save this wonderful old building.
